Giving Tuesday and a Buddhist Reflection on Thanksgiving
Be Part of Dhammadharini’s Giving Tuesday
This Giving Tuesday, I invite us to come together to support Dhammadharini’s mission of creating a sanctuary for Buddhist practice and training, for Bhikkhunis and those who wish to draw near to them—a place that embodies compassion, simplicity, and a deep commitment to the teachings of the Buddha.
Contributions from us will help Dhammadharini preserve and share these invaluable teachings.

Gratitude in Hardship: A Buddhist Reflection on Thanksgiving
On a past Thanksgiving, as the stillness of Aranya Bodhi Forest offered a sanctuary from the world’s tumult, Ayya Tathālokā and the monastic community reflected on the deeper meaning of this holiday. Far from being merely a celebration of abundance, Thanksgiving historically emerged during times of hardship and uncertainty. From the Pilgrims’ survival of their first harrowing year to Lincoln’s call for unity amidst civil war, Thanksgiving carries themes of gratitude, reconciliation, and resolve.
Ayya Tathālokā invites us to explore how Buddhist practice mirrors these sentiments—acknowledging blessings, seeking forgiveness, making determinations, and extending heartfelt wishes for the welfare of all beings. Her reflection on Thanksgiving Day proclamations by Presidents Washington and Lincoln draws profound parallels to the Buddha’s teachings on maintaining a steady and pure heart, even in times of duress.
