Dhammadharini welcomes you to join the International Bhikkhunī Sangha for Sanghamittā Day

The full moon night of December 18 is a special anniversary in Buddhism. It is the lunar anniversary of the arrival of the arahant Bhikkhuni Sanghamitta Theri on the shores of the beautiful isle of Sri Lanka, bringing the light of Dhamma, a sapling of the sacred Bo-tree from Bodhgaya, and the lineage of full ordination for women in Buddhism. All of the Bhikkhuni Sanghas in our world today trace their lineage back through their foremother Sanghamitta.

This year, we honor Sanghamitta Day by speaking with some of today’s pioneer Bhikkhunis who are establishing the Bhikkhuni Sangha in Europe.

PROGRAM:

8:30-10:30am PST* (5:30pm Berlin time)* Morning* Panel discussion “Coming to New Lands” with the European Bhikkhunīs bringing the Bhikkhuni Sangha to Europe —with Ven. Sucintā Mahātherī (Germany), Ven. Phālanānī Therī & Ven. Anuviditā (Anenja Vihara, Germany), Ven. Vimalā (Tilorien Monastery, Belgium), Ayyā Vimalañāni (Germany), and Ven. Tisaranī (Lilienhof-Sirisampanno Kloster, Germany). Ven Sīlavaddhanī (Dhammanikhom Vipassana-Meditationszentrum, Germany) will also be offering a short video.

1:00-2:30pm PST* Afternoon* Sutta Readings and Discussion: “The Dhamma by Which They Awoke” from the Sacca Saṁyutta, with Ven Sobhana Therī, Ven Brahmavara Bhikkhunī, and Ven Kaccayana Bhikkhunī. The teachings—in the Buddha’s own words— that inspired Queen Anulā with 1000 women of ancient Sri Lanka to seek full Bhikkhuni Ordination, bringing Sanghamitta Theri and the Bhikkhuni Sangha from India to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE.

6:00-8:00pm PST* (20th 9-11am SEAsia time, 7:30-9:30am IST)* Evening* Program with Special Guest: Ven. P. Seewalee Nāyaka Mahāthero Chief Monk & General Secretary of Mahabodhi Society Of India:  “Bhikkhuni Therīs in the Vanguard” introducing the newly-inaugurated United Theravada Bhikkhuni Sangha International initiative — hosted by Dhammadharini founder Ven. Bhikkhunī Tathālokā Mahātherī, with Bhikkhunī preceptors and teachers Ven. Santinī Mahātherī from Indonesia, Ven. Viditadhammā Mahātherī from Vietnam, Ven. Dhammanandā Therī of Thailand, and Ven. Bhikkhunī Bodhicittā from Sri Lanka and Australia.
