Introducing the Dhammadharini Pindapata Fund

A living tradition of generosity and connection

What Is Pindapata?

Pindapata is the ancient Theravāda Buddhist tradition of alms round, where monastics receive food offerings from lay supporters. The Pali word bhikkhu (and bhikkhuni for female monastics) means "one who lives on alms." This simple act of receiving and offering food forms a powerful bond between the monastic Sangha and the lay community.

Since the time of the Buddha, laypeople have supported monastics with the Four Requisites: food, robes, shelter, and medicine. In return, the Sangha offers the gift of the Dhamma, guidance, and spiritual friendship. Alms giving isn’t just about nourishment—it’s about cultivating generosity, humility, and a shared path of practice.

“Monks living on alms should reflect: ‘Am I worthy of these offerings?’ And laypeople offer with joy, knowing their gift supports the path of awakening.”

Pindapata at Dhammadharini

At Dhammadharini, our bhikkhunis keep this tradition alive with a weekly alms round in Petaluma. Each Tuesday morning, they walk silently, allowing community members to offer food directly. Many find this to be a deeply moving and joyful experience—connecting across silence, through a simple gesture of generosity.

Tuesday Alms Round Schedule:

  • 10:15am – Trader Joe’s, Petaluma

  • 10:45–11:15am – East Side Farmers’ Market

Whether you live nearby or far away, we invite you to take part in this tradition.

How the Pindapata Fund Works

To support and sustain this practice, we are establishing the Dhammadharini Pindapata Fund—a special fund used exclusively for food offerings to the monastic community.

Anyone Can Contribute

  • One-time or recurring donations are welcome.

  • Example: $20/week becomes an $80/month recurring gift.

  • No need to choose specific weeks—your contribution joins a pool that helps ensure consistent food offerings.

This fund makes it easier for all of us to participate, especially for those who cannot attend the alms round in person.

Why This Matters

The Pindapata Fund allows us to:

  • Sustain the tradition of daily alms in a modern context

  • Ensure regular and sufficient food for the Sangha

  • Widen participation across distance and time

  • Deepen the bond between lay supporters and the monastic community

Whether you’re giving a handful of rice or bread, a warm smile on alms round, or a monthly donation—you’re helping keep the light of the Dhamma shining.

Join Us in Supporting This Living Tradition

Your generosity supports not only food, but the very foundation of monastic life.

With heartfelt anumodana—we thank you.
